Criminal Law with the Open Study College

Hiya friends! On my last post where we had a coffee and a chat (Check it out here!) I briefly spoke about how I’d recently signed up for a course with the Open Study College so I thought I’d make a post explaining more about it to you. Hopefully it’ll also be helpful for those who are looking to study with an online college.

What exactly is the Open Study College?

So, it’s an online college. All of your work is done online or through the post, whatever you choose, personally I think online is much easier. You are assigned your own personal tutor to help you out with whatever course you have chosen to do if you have any questions about anything. They’re very lovely and reply quickly. It is considered a ‘real’ college and the qualifications and certificates you receive at the end are also real.

A good thing about the Open Study College is that you do have a time limit to finish your course (e.g. 1 year to complete), but how you decide to study is completely up to you. If you decide to do an hour daily or a dedicate a day a week to it, it’s completely up to you, as long as you get it done within the said time limit, it’s completely flexible. However this can also be a downside as you do need the motivation to actually do the work, but if I can do it, you sure as hell can.

My experience with the Open Study College

I can be one of the most indecisive people I know, so trying to figure out what I wanted to study was nearly impossible and one of the reasons why I never went to uni. I originally wanted to study English and Literature because it was one of the few things I enjoyed at school (I realised I quite liked English literally mid-exam). I ended up going for criminal law after debating it for about 2 months as I’m a sucker for murder documentaries and crime shows.

I requested a prospectus and got it send via e-mail, looked through and then shortly after signed up for the course, it isn’t free but they do have some payment methods you can choose, luckily they had a sale going on when I decided to go for it. Payment was easy and I started the course the day after (Some of the e-mails got sent into my junk mail so if you decide to go for it, check your junk mail). I got an introduction to my tutor via e-mail and also an e-mail that included a print out study plan if I wanted.

The course I’m doing is assessed by doing written assignments which I have to submit to my tutor to be marked. Some courses need to have an exam which (I believe) you are responsible for booking and paying for yourself.

I’m still currently on Unit 1 – General principles of criminal liability, so I haven’t handed in or completed any assessments yet but I’ll be sure to update you when I have. I’ve been out of education for about 3/4 years, I’m finding it alright, I’m not going to lie, sometimes it can be a little confusing the first time I read something but I get the hang of it after I’ve read it 2/3 times. There’s also a few words I’ve had to google but I’m putting that down to it being a Law course lol. I prefer to study an hour daily rather than dedicate a whole day as I feel like it could get a bit much then.

If you want to know more about the Criminal Law course I’m doing you can find it on the Open Study College website here 🙂

Also! If college isn’t your thing and you’re looking for the Open University, Rosie has been more than helpful with her posts where she write about the Open University (which helped me decide if distance learning was for me). Check out Rosie here!

I hope I have enlightened you all, much love ♥
